John Klimek R.Ph. is senior vice president, standards and industry information technology with the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP). His main objective is to work with industry leaders in healthcare to achieve interoperability amongst the healthcare standards, which will ultimately increase healthcare efficiencies and safety. His other responsibility is for the IT functionality within NCPDP. That includes responsibilities for the NCPDP websites, and any other ancillary websites that NCPDP produces.
Klimek is chair of the SCO (Standards Charter Organization) Summit, whose mission is to provide an environment that facilitates effective coordination and collaboration on U.S. national healthcare informatics standards development, with recognition of the international and multi-industry stakeholder implications and challenges.
Klimek is currently a member of the Health IT Standards Committee’s Content Standards Workgroup. He previously sat on the HIT Standards Committee created by the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC), for three years.
Before joining NCPDP staff, Klimek held several volunteer positions with NCPDP: Board of Trustee, Chair of Strategic Planning Committee, and Work Group 2 – Product Identification Co-Chair, to name a few. Klimek was manager of pharmacy claims pre and post claims processing at Supervalu pharmacies where he has 30+ years of strong and comprehensive management experience in the pharmacy health care field. He has enjoyed a successful career developing and implementing aggressive growth strategies, utilizing a management style to make significant impacts on pharmacy claims processing, margin control, product quality and service levels. During his employment at Supervalu, he also was instrumental in implementing and roll out of new pharmacy standards (NCPDP Telecommunication and SCRIPT Standards) to its 2,000 stores.
Klimek holds a B.S. Degree in Pharmacy from the University of Illinois School of Pharmacy.
