NCI Thesaurus Code Lists
The Federal Medication Terminologies (FMT) is a set of controlled terminologies and code sets from component vocabulary systems developed and maintained by the Food and Drug Administration, National Library of Medicine, Veterans Health Administration, National Cancer Institute and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The National Cancer Institute component terminology within the FMT is the NCI Thesaurus (NCIt) and is pointed to within the External Code List publications for obtaining values for applicable data elements.A presentation overview is available here (updated 03/2011).
NCI Thesaurus subsets are available here. NCI has provided a link to subset files specific to the NCPDP standards usage. The subsets were created by NCI terminologists to provide smaller sets of concepts for ease of use. The files can be downloaded from here or here.
Subset files include (but are not limited to): Drug StrengthForm, StrenthUnitOfMeasure, QuantityUnitOfMeasure, DEASchedule, and MeasurementUnitCode Terminology.
Note: The NCI database is reconciled the last Monday of every month; this is the database from which a version is generated to correspond to the files posted on the ftp site. The files will be posted during the following two weeks. It is important to note that the NCPDP subsets may change slightly on occasion as a definition might be tweaked or a new synonym created. However, the substance of the NCPDP subsets will not change unless a concept is brought forward to NCI that may impact NCPDP subsets. NCI will notify NCPDP if an addition or change is requested. When a new version of the subsets are created, the previous version of the subsets will go into the Archive (http://evs.nci.nih.gov/ftp1/NCPDP/Archive/) and the new dated release will be listed on the ftp site (http://evs.nci.nih.gov/ftp1/NCPDP/). NCI will also include a file that will show the modifications.
Prior Authorization Activity
In response to findings from the 2006 pilots between prescribers and payers, industry requested an XML-based prior authorization function. The documents included in this zip file are DRAFT documents created by NCPDP for use in pilots. The documents should not be distributed, copied, or shared beyond PA pilot participants. It is expected that the piloters will bring forward updates to the documents for consideration as an NCPDP standard.
The Office of the National Coordinator of Health IT issued a statement about electronic prescribing and electronic prior authorization.
February 2008 - Experts in the field of e-prescribing standards met to discuss next steps for three e-prescribing standards that were not ready for adoption by the first generation of e-prescribing pilots funded by the AHRQ and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services beginning in 2005. Experts discussed the technical work needed and additional research and testing required for the RxNorm, Structured and Codified Sig, and Electronic Prior Authorization standards to be recommended for widespread adoption. A summary of the meeting is available here.
October 2011 – NCPDP convened a Focus Group to discuss standardization of ePA. The initial goal of the Focus Group was to identify basic needs and issues for the industry related to electronic Prior Authorization. To implement a pilot project that uses the NCPDP standards that will address the concerns of all affected parties. To come away from this meeting with a basic project plan to create an ePA pilot. Summary of the focus group.
November 2011 – Based on the recommendation of the Focus Group, NCPDP WG11 ePrescribing and Related Transactions re-formed the WG11 ePA Workflow to Transactions Task Group. The task group meets via conference call See the Events Calendar for conference calls.
December 2011 – To facilitate efficient conference calls, the initial conference calls of the task were recorded so that newly joining participants can get up to speed on the background without having to reiterate each call.
