Electronic File Interchange (EFI) Information

The National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) intends to become a CMS certified Electronic File Interchange (EFI) Submitter for obtaining and maintaining National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) on behalf of pharmacies. The requirements for EFI Submitters are currently in development by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS could publish these requirements approximately summer 2005. As a result, NCPDP is urging pharmacy owners to delay applying for their pharmacy's NPI so NCPDP can submit applications in bulk as an administrative service for the pharmacy segment of healthcare.

"NCPDP has been enumerating pharmacies with NCPDP Pharmacy ID Numbers since 1981," stated Lee Ann Stember, President of NCPDP. "With a proven pharmacy database and processes already in place, it is natural for NCPDP to take on this role on behalf of authorizing pharmacies."
