Leveraging Large Language Models to Standardize Prescription Directions for Enhanced Healthcare Interoperability and Patient Safety

  • Wednesday, May 7, 2025
  • 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

[AI TRACK] This presentation explores the use of large language models (LLMs), specifically ChatGPT-4, to standardize prescription medication directions. By converting free-text directions into NCPDP standards, accuracy, completeness, and patient understanding of medication instructions can be improved. This approach enhances communication among providers, health systems, and payers, facilitating better patient care. The session will review methods used in developing and refining the model, achieving 99% accuracy in standardizing prescription directions, and its implications for health information exchange.
